| Why Open Source Software Developers Contribute Knowledge: For Commitment Or For Rewards? - The widespread implementation of computer-mediated communication (CMC) has facilitated the increase of globally linked collaborations. Among them, Open Source Software take advantage of the virtual community to makes collaborative programming and creative innovation more possible. Previous studies on virtual community proposed sense of community as a useful way to foster participants’ further involvement. Scholars like Wellman (1999) and Rheingold (1994) argued that reciprocity is a universal norm of community that the social support and social resources should be given and taken in the forms of exchange. However, other researchers (Hall, 2001; Davernport & Hall, 2002; Hall & Graham, 2004) argued that rewards and incentives are important to the knowledge creation and sharing, yet they don’t necessarily contribute to the commitment of the community. This paper emphasizes on the question: why members with virtual contacts contribute in the community? By examining the relationships between the rewards and the sense of community, we attempt to clarify whether developers contribute for individual demand or for the public good. A survey of 175 OSS developers in Taiwan was conducted during one and half month in 2004. The findings suggested that people with the motive of friendship-building actually have higher possibility in collaboration and the motive of self-achievement would drive people to join international projects. OSS communities have certainly provided developers expected rewards, however, the relationships between reward and intensive commitment does not exist.
