Microsoft Watch - Developer - Windows Mobile Developers Pay What? - Like Apple, Microsoft plans a mobile applications store. Like iPhone developers, Windows Mobile developers submit applications through a specific program. Microsoft's terms are at first glance generous: Developers get a 70 percent cut, while Microsoft takes 30 percent. This is similar to Apple's App Store and some other application marketplaces. But Microsoft asks for way more upfront than does Apple. Both companies charge developers $99 per year to participate in the mobile apps program. But Microsoft imposes a five-application cap, after which developers pay $99 per each additional application per year. Apple developers pay the 99-buck fee; that's it. Silicon Alley Insider's Dan Frommer rightly asks: "Why is Microsoft nickel-and-diming Windows Mobile developers? " I wondered the same thing. That's how I interpret last week's mind-boggling Windows Mobile 6.5 developer strategy. I was so dumfounded, it took five days before I could blog. Even now, there's no sense—other than perhaps arrogance, or idiocy—that I can see to Microsoft's plans. GOT A TIP OR RUMOR?
