I’ve already talked about designers and how their critique training makes them impossible to work with. Now let’s look at the other side of the coin: programmers.
So it’s no wonder that, in team meetings, programmers can behave like fickle Gods. “No we couldn’t possibly do it that way,” they’ll say. And they may have reasons, or maybe it’s just not the way things are done in their universe.
The good news is, programmers want their work to be used, and the good ones know that the design matters. So programmers and designers actually have the same goal: getting the stuff used. If each can honor the talents of the other, great things can happen.
However, none of the programmers I’ve ever known have insisted the humans sacrificed be virgins.
Giles: I completely agree with you. Stating the goal and then asking for a solution is how to talk to both designers and programmers. I’m just being a little more colorful in my description. Just as arts chool crit sessions influence how designers work in teams later, being the God of a tiny universe influences how programmers see the world.
I’ve heard programmers talking of themselves as Godlikes because they made some webpage… but lets face it: We are kinda stupid. Not for the fact of low IQ… but for the fact that our work is being made to millions by someone who without the sweat gets to capitalize on our work. If you ask me THATS godlike. Fucking parasites.
I can see this a lot. A lot of programmers (myself included) have a lot of ego tied to their work. That definitely colors our interactions with others. The biggest problem from my perspective that comes out of this is the belief by a lot of programmers that they know what the product people want. The product people don’t get what they want, and they no longer trust the programmers to do things their way, so they are inclined to step in and try to manage the process. The programs get more offended, and often become more obstinate, and the cycle goes on.
J2EE: EJB, JSP, Servlets, JSF, JSTL, JCA, JMS, JTA, JNDI, JDBC, JMX, RMI, etc.
Frameworks: Struts, Hibernate, JPA, iBATIS, JBoss AOP, Spring, JSF, AJAX, GWT, YUI, Flex/Flash, JUnit, and Jakarta common libraries.
Integration: Web Services on Axis and WebMethods; as well as the Web Service Standards such as SOAP, WSDL and UDDI.

Programmers are Tiny Gods

In this series, I’m exploring the stories about work I find myself coming back to a lot. I call them Things I Learned the Hard Way .
In Genesis, God creates things in a certain order. Why plants before animals? I dunno. It just seemed right to Him. (Don’t worry, it’s just a metaphor .)
Programmers are the same way. In any programming language, there will be many ways to solve a problem. The right way to do it is a personal decision, made by the programmer, just like in Genesis.
Programmers are the Gods of their tiny worlds. They create something out of nothing. In their command-line universe, they say when it’s sunny and when it rains. And the tiny universe complies.
So if you’re working with a programmer, you have to treat him or her like a God. You have to pray. You cannot issue edicts. You have to come on bended knee. “Here’s the problem I have. I need a solution. Please help.”
